Three Victories - a commemorative artwork by Afzal Shaafiu.
Afzal Shaafiu presented a commemorative artwork, Three Victories.
The artwork, Three Victories, was commissioned to memorialise Maldives making history as the first country in the world certified by WHO for the Triple Elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis B.
The artwork is riddled with symbolism marking the challenges and the triumphs. The imagined wombs mirrors a world of mangrove forest or a coral reef - where fragile being find shelter. A child linked to the mother through and umbilical cord blooming 3 flowers that represent the triumphs of eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV, Hepatitis B and Syphilis. A moon appears in the background depicting hope and renewal. Islamic geometric motifs - similar to that of Utheemu Ganduvaru - in the background represents the institutions and systems that worked to eliminate the threats.
