Maldivian Resort Architecture: an Architectural Exhibition by Mauroof Jameel

Mauroof Jameel, a renowned architect and illustrator, is bringing decades of research and documentation to the public through his latest exhibition, Maldivian Resort Architecture, currently on display at the National Art Gallery. Running from 3rd June till 18th June, the exhibition presents a comprehensive look at the evolution of resort architecture in the Maldives, exploring how the industry has transformed alongside the country’s social and economic development.

Drawing on years of study, sketches and archival material, Mauroof traces the architectural journey of Maldivian resorts from their beginnings in the 1970s to the globally recognised luxury properties of today. His exhibition highlights not only the physical transformation of resort spaces but also the ideas, influences and innovations that shaped their design over time.

Through detailed illustrations and historical narratives, Mauroof documents the progression from the simple island resorts of the early tourism era to the sophisticated developments that now define the Maldivian tourism brand. The exhibition showcases how architects adapted to the challenges of building on remote islands while creating environments that responded to both local conditions and international expectations.

A central focus of the exhibition is the resort’s role as a uniquely Maldivian architectural form. Mauroof examines how design evolved from modest structures influenced by local building traditions to iconic features such as overwater villas, expansive waterfront developments and highly curated guest experiences that have become synonymous with luxury tourism in the Maldives.

Beyond architecture, the exhibition reflects on the broader impact of tourism on the country’s identity. Through his research, Mauroof illustrates how resort development influenced economic growth, employment opportunities and the Maldives’ global image, making resort architecture an important part of the nation’s contemporary history.

By bringing together decades of architectural documentation, analysis and artistic interpretation, Mauroof Jameel’s exhibition offers a rare and insightful perspective in one of the Maldives’ most significant design achievements. It serves as both a historical record and a celebration of the creativity, innovation and vision that helped shape the country’s world-renowned resort industry.
