Breathing Reef: Guardians of the Islands – a solo exhibition by Ahmed Khaleel
Breathing Reef: Guardians of the Islands – a solo exhibition by Ahmed Khaleel opens at Art Gallery Malé.
Ahmed Khaleel’s exhibition, Breathing Reef: Guardians of the Islands, is more than a display of paintings – it is a reflective journey into personal rediscovery, cultural memory and environmental urgency. Ahmed Khaleel (Andu) brings to this body of work a lifetime of observation shaped by his surroundings and extensive professional career as a foreign service officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
After 40 years of servitude at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Khaleel retired in November 2023. During these years, art became a form of rest and reset; later a hobby than evolved into a meaningful collection of paintings.
Working with an array of mediums, Ahmed Khaleel draws inspiration from the oceanic landscapes that have long defined life in the Maldives. The sea, ever-present and ever-changing, becomes both subject and metaphor in his work. His paintings explore themes of movement, resilience, and regeneration – particularly, with attention to the fragile and vital ecosystem of coral reefs. These themes are explored through an emotional and intuitive lens rather than a scientific approach.
Ahmed Khaleel’s artistic style is marked by layered textures, fluid forms and a dynamic interplay of colour. His compositions echo the rhythms of the ocean – currents shifting, reefs growing and ecosystems breathing.
The exhibition highlights that the coral reefs are essential to island nations like the Maldives. Breathing Reefs: Guardians of the Islands reflects on how these ecosystems protect shorelines, support marine biodiversity, sustain fisheries and underpin tourism.
For Khaleel, it is a rediscovery – a return to creativity after a lifetime of service. For viewers, it is an invitation to reflect on their own relationship with the ocean; to recognise the delicate balance that sustains islands ecosystems; and to consider the urgent need for preservation. Breathing Reef: Guardians of the Islands stands as both a celebration and caution. It honours the beauty and resilience of coral reefs while reminding us of their vulnerability. In doing so, it calls attention not only to what still survives beneath the waves, but also to what is at risk of being lost for future generations.
The exhibition is on view till 7th May at the Art Gallery Malé.
