Island Stories - A Solo Exhibition by Umair Badeeu

Maldivian artist and curator, Umair Badheeu, is showcasing his deep connection to island life through ‘Island Stories,’ an exhibition at ananea Madivaru Maldives. With decades of experience in fine art, documentary photography and exhibitions, Umair focuses on Maldivian culture and heritage.

After years of documenting everyday life through photography, Umair has returned to watercolour painting. He explores the familiar and understated scenes across the Maldives. He portrays harbours, fishing beaches and the people that make up these island communities.

Umair Badheeu is recognised for his contribution to preserving Maldivian heritage. He worked to establish the Dutch Onion Museum at Cora Cora Maldives, reconstructing an ancient Maldivian home and helping conserve 900-year-old bathing tanks.

This recent exhibition, ‘Island Stories,’ brings these artistic and cultural interests together, offering guests a closer look at the underrated beauty of the Maldives. The exhibition goes towards ananda Madivaru Maldives’ efforts to encourage and promote local creativity and storytelling.

‘Island Stories’ opened on 31 August 2026 at the resort’s Art Studio, with Umair walking the guests through a tour of selected artworks.
